From Munich: Neuschwanstein & Linderhof Castle Full-Day Trip
Coach from Munich to both of Ludwig II's palaces in one day, with a guide and optional timed castle tickets.
Check AvailabilityCastle Tours Europe is an independent guide to the castles of Europe, built around the tours and tickets you can actually book. We compare operators, prices and what each tour includes, then send you to the castle page that settles the rest.
Book the Neuschwanstein and Linderhof day trip from Munich first if fairytale castles are why you came. Neuschwanstein entry is timed and the slots sell out, so a tour with tickets is the safe route. Check entry: many castle day trips do not include admission, and some castles close or cut hours in winter.
Key takeaways
These 12 were picked from the castle tours on sale across Europe by rating, review count, what each one actually covers and where it starts, with one strong option per region rather than five versions of the same day. Every card states whether the castle entry is in the price, because that is the difference between a $85 day and a $85 day plus $23.50 (€21) at the gate. To choose, start with the city you are sleeping in, then check the entry line.

Most castle trips are decided by one country and one base city. Pick the region and the page takes it from there.
Germany's castles split between Bavaria's palaces and the Rhine ruins. Munich and Frankfurt are the two useful bases.
Edinburgh covers most Scottish castle plans, with Inverness the base for the west coast. Summer sells out, winter hours shrink.
London is the base for nearly every English castle day. Windsor is the closest working royal palace, Kent and Northumberland need fuller days.
Irish castle days run from Dublin to the south-west, three castles deep. Blarney stays open all year with no timed slots.
Prague, Bucharest, Lisbon, Rome, Montreux, Salzburg and Ljubljana each anchor a castle day. Entry rules vary sharply between them.
The Loire valley is Europe's densest castle region and Paris is the gate. Day trips cover Chambord and Chenonceau in one 13-hour run.
These are the castles people fly for. Each one has a fact that decides how you visit, and a tour that covers it.
Ludwig II's palace above the Pöllat gorge is the reason the word fairytale castle exists. Visits are only by 30-minute guided or audio-guided tour of 14 rooms, on a timed ticket. Under-18s enter free but still need a ticket.
The village ticket centre sells limited same-day tickets that are often gone by late morning in high season. The official advice is to arrive 1.5 to 2 hours before your entry time. Read the Neuschwanstein Castle guide or book the Neuschwanstein and Linderhof day trip from Munich.
The castle above the Royal Mile holds the Honours of Scotland, the crown jewels, with Mons Meg on the battlements and the One O'Clock Gun firing most days. The castle can close at short notice in high winds. Set aside at least 2 hours.
Tickets sell out far in advance in summer, and once sold out online there are no walk-up tickets. The full details are in the Edinburgh Castle guide, or take the Edinburgh Castle guided tour with entry ticket.
Burg Eltz is a medieval family castle still owned by the family that built it, in a wooded valley off the Moselle. It opens daily from late March to 1 November and closes for the whole winter. The ticket includes the 35 to 40-minute guided tour and the Treasury.
That short season is the fact that decides the trip: miss it and you wait until spring. See the Eltz Castle guide for routes from Frankfurt.
Stirling guarded the gateway between the Scottish lowlands and highlands, and its Royal Palace was the childhood home of Mary Queen of Scots. It is open daily all year, 09:30 to 17:00 in winter. The Stirling Castle admission ticket lists from $25 with the audio guide.
The Stirling Castle guide has the detail, or cover it with Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle and the Kelpies from Edinburgh.
A working royal residence for nearly 1,000 years, Windsor holds the State Apartments and St George's Chapel. It opens Thursday to Monday and closes Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and the chapel closes to visitors on Sundays. The Windsor Castle admission ticket lists from $43 and converts into a free 1-Year Pass.
The whole castle or the apartments can close at short notice, so check closure dates. The Windsor Castle guide covers it, as does Stonehenge, Windsor Castle and Bath from London.
Built nearly 600 years ago by Cormac MacCarthy, Blarney's keep holds the Blarney Stone at the top, kissed upside down by millions of visitors. It opens all year, daily from 09:00 with no timed slots, so unlike most big castles you can simply turn up. The Blarney Castle guide has the practical detail, and Blarney Castle, Rock of Cashel and Cahir Castle from Dublin covers three castles in one day with every admission included.
Prague Castle packs St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St George's Basilica and Golden Lane into one main circuit ticket, the official entry ticket from $21, valid two days. Buildings open 09:00-17:00 in summer but only 09:00-16:00 from November to March, which decides how late you can start. The Prague Castle guide explains the circuit, or take the Prague Castle tour with local guide and entry.
The 14th-century fortress associated with the Dracula legend stands on a rock at the edge of Transylvania. Bran opens late on Mondays, 12:00 to 18:00 or 19:00, against 09:00 the rest of the week, so a Monday tour hits a different rhythm. Adult entry is $20.90 (100 lei).
Most tours pair it with Peleș Castle and Brașov. The Bran Castle guide sorts the options, including the Bran, Peleș and Brașov day trip from Bucharest.
The hills above Lisbon hold Pena Palace, the candy-coloured romantic palace, and the older Moorish Castle on the ridge. The Pena Palace and Park ticket lists from $13, the Moorish Castle is a separate $13.43 (€12) ticket, and a shuttle runs the steep climb from the park gate every 15 minutes. Timed slots apply at the palace.
The Sintra castles guide covers both, and Sintra, Pena, Regaleira, Cabo da Roca and Cascais from Lisbon fits the day together.
Chambord is the largest château of the Loire, a French Renaissance hunting lodge with a famous double-helix staircase. Visitors from outside the European Economic Area pay a higher entry price than EEA residents, and the Chambord entry ticket lists from $24. See the castles in France guide or take Loire Valley castles from Paris with wine, which includes entry.
Castle hours are set by each castle's own website and they bite harder than most travellers expect. These are the rules that change a tour plan.
| Castle | Opening rule | What it means for a tour |
|---|---|---|
| Neuschwanstein | 16 October to 27 March: 10:00-16:00. Closed 1 January and 24, 25, 31 December. | Winter days run shorter, so the fixed entry time on a tour matters even more. |
| Eltz Castle | Closed November to March. | A winter trip to the Moselle sees the valley, not the castle. |
| Alnwick Castle | Closed until March 2027. | Tours to Northumberland run without castle entry outside the season. |
| Windsor Castle | Closed Tuesday and Wednesday. | A London day trip on those days needs a different castle. |
| Edinburgh Castle | Can close at short notice in high winds. | Keep the morning flexible in stormy weather and check before travel. |
| Eilean Donan Castle | Closed the whole of January. | Highlands and Skye tours still stop for the view, but there is no entry. |
| Bran Castle | Monday opens 12:00, last entry 18:00/19:00. | A Monday Bucharest day trip starts slower than the rest of the week. |
| Prague Castle | Buildings 09:00-16:00 from 1 November to 31 March. | Start the tour in the morning or Golden Lane and the palace close on you. |
Price and route matter less than three details printed small on the booking page. Check these before you pay.
It varies tour by tour and often option by option. Blarney Castle, Rock of Cashel and Cahir Castle from Dublin includes all three admissions. The Edinburgh Castle guided tour with entry ticket includes the castle ticket. Loire Valley castles from Paris with wine includes Chambord and Chenonceau. But the Bran, Peleș and Brașov day trip from Bucharest leaves you to buy both castle tickets yourself, and Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle and the Kelpies from Edinburgh sells the Stirling entry as an option. Read the inclusion line every time.
Neuschwanstein admits visitors only on timed 30-minute tours, and the village ticket centre's same-day tickets are often gone by late morning in high season. Book the Neuschwanstein and Linderhof day trip from Munich with the entry option, because the day is built around a fixed slot. Edinburgh Castle has the same shape of problem: in summer tickets sell out far in advance and there are no walk-up tickets once sold out online.
A guided tour with the ticket in the price removes that risk.
If the castle sits in the city you are already staying in, a ticket is often enough. The Castel Sant'Angelo entry ticket with audio guide is $28 and you walk in from the river. But when the castle is two hours from the nearest airport, a day trip earns its price: the coach, the driver-guide and the timed entry are handled for you. That is the case for Neuschwanstein from Munich, the Loire from Paris and the three-castle day from Dublin.
Our castle day trips page sorts the routes by base city.
Germany's strongest castles split between Bavaria's palaces and the Rhine and Moselle ruins, with Munich and Frankfurt as the practical bases. The country page ranks them and links each tour. Castles in Germany
Windsor, Warwick and Leeds Castle are all reachable on coach days from the capital. The plan page lines up the routes, hours and entry costs. Castle day trips
A ranked shortlist across ten countries, each with the fact that decides a visit and the tour that covers it. Start there if the choice feels too wide. Best castles in Europe
Edinburgh and Inverness cover most of the country, from the Crown Jewels to Eilean Donan. The Scotland page maps the routes and the seasons. Castles in Scotland
The main circuit ticket covers four buildings on a huge hillside site, and a guide turns two hours of wandering into a route. The attraction page compares the ticket and the tours. Prague Castle
England runs from Windsor's State Apartments to Alnwick's film sets, mostly on coach days from London. The England page sorts them by distance and season. Castles in England
Book the moment your dates are fixed for the two biggest sell-outs: Neuschwanstein, whose timed slots vanish in summer, and Edinburgh Castle, which stops selling online tickets once the day is full and offers no walk-up alternative. Tours elsewhere usually have room, but the inclusive entry options on the Neuschwanstein and Linderhof day trip from Munich are the ones that disappear first. Winter is the opposite: capacity is high and some castles are shut.
Work from your base city first, then check three lines on the listing: what the price includes, how long the day runs and whether the castle entry is in it. A 13-hour coach day like Loire Valley castles from Paris with wine suits a different traveller from a 2.5-hour walk such as the Prague Castle tour with local guide and entry. Our comparison table above matches needs to tours in one look.
Meeting points vary and matter on a morning schedule. The Edinburgh Castle guided tour with entry ticket meets on the Royal Mile at 361 High Street, not at the castle gate. Sintra, Pena, Regaleira, Cabo da Roca and Cascais from Lisbon meets in front of Rossio station at 08:00, and the Loire day meets at the Catacombs entrance in Paris. The meeting point is on every tour card on this site.
Big coaches are cheaper per head and run daily from the main stations, which is why the Neuschwanstein and Linderhof day trip from Munich carries such a large review count. Small-group minivans cost more, move faster and reach tighter places, which suits hill towns like Sintra. If the castle is the whole point of the day, the guide-to-guest ratio matters less than the entry ticket being in the price.
Transport, a guide and often the castle entry, but read the line carefully because options differ on the same listing. Blarney Castle, Rock of Cashel and Cahir Castle from Dublin includes all three admissions, while the Bran, Peleș and Brașov day trip from Bucharest includes neither and leaves you buying both castle tickets on the day. Lunch, cruises and audio guides are usually separate.
The one most likely to sell out around your dates, and that is the Neuschwanstein and Linderhof day trip from Munich with the entry option, because Neuschwanstein admits visitors only on timed tours and the slots go in high season. Second place goes to the Edinburgh Castle guided tour with entry ticket for the same reason: once Edinburgh Castle sells a day out online, there is no gate fallback.
Cancellation terms are set by each operator on the booking page, and they are not stated on this site, so check the policy shown before you pay. Weather can close castles directly: Edinburgh Castle can shut at short notice in high winds, and the Hebridean roads to Eilean Donan Castle can turn in any season. A flexible-rate option is worth the extra few dollars on a winter booking.
Sleep in the town the castle tours leave from, or in the village below the castle if you want the first entry of the day. Füssen for Neuschwanstein, Inverness for Loch Ness and Eilean Donan, Edinburgh Old Town for Edinburgh and Stirling, Brașov for Bran and Sintra town for Pena Palace. Our where to stay for castle tours page compares the bases and links hotel searches for each.
