Predjama Castle built into the mouth of a cave in a tall grey cliff, predjama castle

Predjama Castle: the castle in a cave mouth, and the best ways to visit it

Predjama Castle is a Renaissance castle built into the mouth of a cave in south-central Slovenia, about 11 kilometres from the town of Postojna and 9 kilometres from Postojna Cave. A 15th-century knight held out against a siege here, supplied through a secret shaft in the rock. Today most visitors see it on a combined cave and castle day trip from Ljubljana, and this guide helps you pick the right one. For the full shortlist, see the castle tours in Europe.

Quick answer Predjama Castle in short

Predjama Castle is a Renaissance fortress built into a cave mouth in the Slovenian karst, first mentioned in 1274 and rebuilt in its present form in 1570. It sits 9 kilometres from Postojna Cave, and the two are almost always visited together on a half-day or full-day trip from Ljubljana. Every tour below includes transport from the capital, and three of the four include both entries.

What Predjama Castle is and why it matters

A castle that uses a cave as its defence, its larder and its escape route.

A castle built into a cliff face

Predjama stands under a natural rocky arch high in a stone wall, positioned there precisely to make access difficult. The name says it plainly: in Slovene, pred jama means in front of the cave. The first castle on the site was recorded in 1274 under the German name Luegg, built in Gothic style by the Patriarch of Aquileia and later held by the Luegg noble family, the Knights of Adelsberg, the German name for Postojna.

The castle you see today is the third one. An earthquake destroyed the second in 1511, and in 1570 the current Renaissance castle was built pressed against the vertical cliff beneath the original medieval fortification. It has stayed in that form, virtually unchanged, ever since. In the 18th century the Cobenzl family used it as a summer residence, and the Windischgrätz family owned it from 1846 until the end of World War II, when it was nationalised and turned into a museum.

Among the best castles in Europe, this is the one where geology does the fortifying. Compare it with the hilltop strategy of Hohensalzburg Fortress or the moat-and-mound defences of Leeds Castle and the difference is obvious.

Erazem of Lueg and the siege that made the castle famous

The castle's fame rests on Erazem of Lueg, the robber baron who held it in the 15th century. By legend he killed Marshal Pappenheim at the Vienna court after Pappenheim insulted the honour of Erazem's dead friend Andreas Baumkircher of Vipava. Pappenheim was a relative of Emperor Frederick III, so Erazem fled to the family fortress and carried on raiding Habsburg estates in Carniola in alliance with King Matthias Corvinus.

The emperor sent the governor of Trieste to besiege the castle. The siege failed to starve Erazem out because a vertical natural shaft, which Erazem had enlarged, led out of the castle to an exit near the top of the cliff. Food went up, and plunder kept coming in. Erazem was eventually killed after a long siege. A popular but unfounded legend holds that he was betrayed by one of his men and shot by a cannon while in his lavatory.

You will hear this story from every guide, and the shaft itself is part of the visit. It is the reason the castle matters as more than a pretty façade.

What you see inside, in walking order

The visit runs from the living quarters in the built castle out into the cave behind it.

The built castle: four floors of rooms

You enter the Renaissance castle of 1570 and climb through its floors, which hold the furnished rooms of the residence: living quarters, a kitchen and the chapel, arranged as a self-guided route with the app audio tour that is included in admission. The rooms are panelled and atmospheric rather than palatial. This was a defensive residence pressed against a cliff, not a courtly seat on the scale of Windsor Castle or Prague Castle.

The most photographed room is the one tied to the Erazem legend, the spot where the besieged knight supposedly met his end. Whether or not you believe the cannon-in-the-lavatory tale, the view from the castle's openings over the valley explains why nobody ever took it by assault from the front.

Give the interior rooms about an hour. The route is one-way and the stairs are steep, which is normal for a cave castle. Wear shoes with a grip. Between rooms, look out of the windows on the cliff side: the building sits in the overhang, so parts of the wall are living rock rather than masonry.

The cave behind and below the castle

The second half of the visit goes where the built castle cannot: into the karst cave in the cliff behind and beneath it. This is the space that made the siege fail, because the vertical shaft Erazem enlarged climbs through the rock to an exit near the cliff top, 25 metres from the edge. You can look into the shaft system and understand at once how food and loot moved in and out during the siege.

The cave under the castle opens only from June to August, so check the season if that section is the reason for your trip. The main castle is open every day all year. The temperature inside is steady and cool whatever the month, so carry a layer even in summer, the same advice that applies to Postojna Cave itself, which stays at about 10°C.

Photography tip from experience rather than the guidebook: the castle reads best from the meadow in front of it, so shoot it before you go in and again after you come out.

Hours, tickets and when it is quiet

The castle opens every day all year, but one part of it is strictly seasonal.

Opening pattern and ticket prices

Predjama Castle is open every day of the year. The cave under the castle is the exception: it opens only in June, July and August. The castle's own site is the place to check exact daily opening times before you travel, since we do not state fixed hours here.

Official admission is $26.90 (€24) for an adult and $16.12 (€14.40) for a child aged 6 to 15. Admission includes the app audio tour. If you arrive on a combined tour from Ljubljana, the castle entry is part of your tour price on three of the four listings we compare, so the official gate price applies to you only on the one option where tickets are paid separately on the day, or if you travel independently.

The practical consequence: book a timed combination in advance. The castle itself is small and the cave route is guided, so capacity is real. In high season a shuttle runs between Postojna Cave and the castle with departures up to every 20 minutes, which makes doing both in one day straightforward even without a car.

When to go for quiet

The castle is at its emptiest in the first hour of opening on a weekday, before the tour coaches from Ljubljana arrive with the cave crowds. Midday to early afternoon is the peak, because most combined tours visit the castle after the cave. Late afternoon on the last entry is a second good window in summer.

Season matters as much as the hour. July and August bring the biggest numbers and also open the cave under the castle, so there is a trade-off. May, June and September give you thinner crowds with the full complex usually running. Winter visits trade the cave section for near solitude in the built castle, and the rock setting is arguably at its most dramatic in cold, damp weather.

This pattern is our estimate based on how the tour itineraries are sequenced, not a published figure.

Getting to Predjama Castle

The castle sits in the village of Predjama in Inner Carniola, and nearly everyone reaches it through Postojna.

From Ljubljana: the easy way and the hard way

The village of Predjama lies about 11 kilometres from the town of Postojna and 9 kilometres from Postojna Cave, roughly an hour from Ljubljana by road. There is no train to the castle itself, so the realistic choices are a car or an organised tour.

For most visitors a tour is simply the better deal. A cave and castle day trip removes the parking, the driving and the ticket queue for less than the price of the stress, and the castle and cave sequence is planned for you. Every option in our comparison table picks up in central Ljubljana.

Driving yourself is workable: the castle is signposted from the Postojna area, and parking is at the site. The advantage is flexibility on timing. The disadvantage is that you juggle two ticket offices and the shuttle timetable between the cave and the castle.

If Predjama is your whole reason for travelling, remember it is small. Most people pair it with Postojna Cave, which is why the combined tours dominate. For more pairing ideas across the country, see our guide to castles in Slovenia, and for other regions our hubs on castles in Germany and castles in France.

How much time to give Predjama Castle, three ways

Half a day covers the castle and the cave. The only question is what else you add.

Three routings compared

The castle itself needs about an hour, and Postojna Cave needs around 1.5 hours for its tour, of which 3.5 kilometres run on the cave train and 1.5 kilometres on foot with a guide. Add travel from Ljubljana and a half day disappears quickly, which is why the 5.5 and 6 hour tours are the standard shape of this trip.

The table below sets out the three routings we would actually consider. If you want depth rather than breadth, take the half day. If Ljubljana is your only base in Slovenia and you want the postcard highlights, the Bled combination earns its ten hours.

  • Book the earliest departure you can, because the castle fills after the cave tours arrive
  • Carry a warm layer: the cave holds about 10°C all year
  • Check that the cave-under-the-castle section is open, June to August only

Do and do not at Predjama Castle

Do

  • Book a timed combined tour in advance, the castle and cave both run to capacity in summer
  • Wear grippy shoes, the castle floors climb through steep staircases cut into the rock
  • Bring a warm layer, the cave holds about 10°C all year
  • Shoot the castle from the meadow in front before you enter, it is the best angle
  • Visit early on a weekday if you want the rooms quiet
  • Check the season, the cave under the castle opens only June to August

Don't

  • Do not attempt the whole complex in under three hours, the cave tour alone takes about 1.5
  • Do not count on driving to Ljubljana and back on public transport alone, there is no train to the castle
  • Do not skip Postojna Cave, the combination is the whole point of the trip for almost everyone
  • Do not expect a palace interior, this was a defensive residence, not a royal seat
  • Do not arrive late for your cave entry, the tour runs on a fixed train schedule
  • Do not bring a bulky rucksack into the castle rooms, the passages are narrow

Predjama Castle: practical questions

How do I get to Predjama Castle from Ljubljana?

The castle is about an hour from Ljubljana by road and has no train link, so the practical choice is a tour or a hire car. All four tours we compare include central Ljubljana pickup, and the 6-hour option is our pick because both entries are included.

How much do Predjama Castle tickets cost?

The official adult admission is $26.90 (€24) and a child aged 6 to 15 pays $16.12 (€14.40), with the app audio tour included. On a combined tour from Ljubljana the castle entry is already part of the tour price.

Is Predjama Castle a Game of Thrones location?

No. Predjama Castle has not been confirmed as a Game of Thrones filming site. It has served as a filming location for other productions, but the specific titles are best checked with the castle's own site rather than relied on.

How long does a visit take?

About an hour for the castle rooms and, in season, extra time for the cave under the castle. Most visitors give the castle and Postojna Cave together a half day, which is why the tours run 5.5 to 6 hours from Ljubljana.

When is the cave under the castle open?

Only from June to August. The main castle is open every day all year, so a winter visit still works, but plan a summer trip if the cave section is the reason you are going. Check the official site for daily times before you travel.

Do I need to book Predjama Castle tickets in advance?

Yes, we would always book ahead. Entry is timed, the cave tour runs to a fixed train schedule and summer demand is strong. Booking a combined tour secures skip-the-line entry to both sights in one step.

Is Predjama Castle worth it if I have already seen other castles?

Yes, because there is nothing else like it. Where Eltz Castle hides in a valley and Bran Castle sits on a rock, Predjama uses the cave itself as its fortification, and the siege story is attached to the actual shaft you see inside.

What is the temperature inside the castle and cave?

The cave system holds about 10°C all year, so bring a layer even in July. The castle rooms are cooler than outside in summer and damp in winter. Closed shoes are sensible on the steep stone stairs.

Ready to book your Predjama Castle day trip?

Pick the six-hour cave and castle tour from Ljubljana if you want the simplest day, or the Bled combination if this is your only full day in Slovenia.

Every listing includes free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start.
