Alnwick Castle: the Harry Potter castle and how to visit it from Edinburgh

Alnwick Castle in Northumberland has belonged to the Percy family since 1309 and stood in for Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films. It sits just over the Scottish border, so every Alnwick Castle tour here starts in Edinburgh and pairs the castle with Holy Island or the Borders. This guide compares all the bookable day trips and explains what to do with your time on site. For the full shortlist, see the castle tours in Europe.

Quick answer Alnwick Castle in brief

Yes, Alnwick Castle was a Harry Potter filming location: the courtyards and outer walls appeared as Hogwarts in the first two films, and broomstick training was filmed here. It is the real home of Ralph Percy, the 12th Duke of Northumberland. The castle is seasonal and reopens in March, and the easiest visit is a day tour from Edinburgh.

What Alnwick Castle is and why it matters

A living border fortress that is still a family home, and a film set that millions recognise without ever having heard its name.

A Percy fortress on the Scottish border

Alnwick Castle guards a crossing of the River Aln. Ivo de Vesci built the first parts around 1096 after the Norman Conquest, and King David I of Scotland captured it in 1136. William the Lion besieged it twice in the 1170s and was captured outside the walls at the Battle of Alnwick. The Percys bought the castle in 1309 and rebuilt it in stone as a major border fortress. The Abbot's Tower, the Middle Gateway and the Constable's Tower survive from that 14th century building programme.

In the 18th century Robert Adam, Capability Brown and others remodelled the castle for the returning Percy family, and between 1854 and 1865 Anthony Salvin was paid £250,000 to re-medievalise much of Adam's work. That layered interior is what you walk through today. It is a Grade I listed building and still the home of the 12th Duke of Northumberland.

  • Built from about 1096, rebuilt in stone by 1157
  • Percy family home since 1309
  • Salvin's 19th century remodelling created today's look

The Harry Potter castle

Alnwick Castle is famous worldwide as the castle used for exterior shots of Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets. The courtyards and outer walls doubled for the school's grounds, and the flying lesson and broomstick training scenes were filmed here. In season the castle runs broomstick training sessions on the very spot, which is why families plan whole trips around it.

Filming is only part of the draw. The castle has appeared in other productions including Downton Abbey, and in 2016 it drew more than 600,000 visitors a year together with the adjacent Alnwick Garden. If the film connection is your reason for coming, the Harry Potter themed day is built around it, and you can compare it with other castles in England.

What you see at Alnwick Castle, in walking order

A tour stop gives you a few hours, so this is the route that gets the most out of them.

Gatehouse, courtyards and the film spots

You enter through the gatehouse into the outer courtyard, where most Harry Potter filming happened. The two courtyards are open ground you can walk at will, and this is where broomstick training sessions run in season. Give the courtyards the first half hour of your visit because coach parties fill them later.

From the courtyards you can walk the walls and battlements for views over the park and the town of Alnwick. The State Rooms, richly remodelled in the 19th century, are the family's grand interiors, and the Great Kitchen is one of the castle's most talked about historic spaces. Check the day's programme on arrival, because exhibitions and activities change through the season.

  • Outer and inner courtyards, the Hogwarts filming spots
  • Broomstick training on the filming location in season
  • State Rooms and Great Kitchen inside the keep
  • Walls and battlements with park and town views

The Alnwick Garden next door

The Alnwick Garden sits adjacent to the castle and is a separate attraction with its own ticket. Its best-known features are the Poison Garden and the Grand Cascade. The two sites together received over 600,000 visitors in 2016, so the Garden is not a quiet add-on in high season.

If your tour gives you more time on site than the castle itself needs, the Garden is an easy second stop on foot. If your time is short, stay with the castle: the interiors and film locations are what you came for, and the Garden deserves a proper visit of its own.

Hours, season and when it is quiet

Alnwick Castle is one of the most seasonal castles in Britain, and this shapes every booking you will make.

A short season, no winter visits

The castle closes completely for the winter. The castle closes for the winter and the castle reopens in March. This matters twice over. First, you cannot plan a winter visit at any price. Second, all the Edinburgh day tours run their Alnwick stops only inside the season, so check dates before you book flights.

Hours within the season are published on the castle's own website, so check there before travel rather than guessing. Online tickets are sold as 12-month season passes at $29.40 (£22) for adults, which means a return visit in the same season costs nothing extra.

  • Reopens March
  • Adult online ticket $29.40 (£22), valid 12 months
  • Concession $23.90 (£17.90), child 5 to 16 $15.51 (£11.60)

Quiet times and booking rhythm

The castle draws coach crowds mid-morning through early afternoon, so the first hour after opening is the calmest window, our estimate. UK school holidays are the busiest stretch, especially for broomstick sessions which fill fast.

For tour travellers the timing is fixed by the operator, not by you. The 08:15 Harry Potter departure reaches the castle early in the day, which is one reason we rate it. Every tour here offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, so book early and adjust later.

Getting to Alnwick Castle

The castle sits in the town of Alnwick in Northumberland, and almost all visitors arrive from Edinburgh.

From Edinburgh, the practical route

Alnwick lies south of the border on the coastal side of Northumberland, roughly an hour and a half's drive from Edinburgh by coach. The tours leave from two meeting points. Timberbush departs from Castle Terrace, the Harry Potter small-coach day from 60 High Street on the Royal Mile at 08:15. Arrive at least 15 minutes before your stated departure, and note that the Viator Holy Island and Alnwick coach has no restroom on board.

Driving yourself is possible but rarely worth it for a day trip, because the tide-dependent Holy Island crossing and Bamburgh coastal stops are what make these days special, and a driver-guide handles both. If you are building a wider border itinerary, see our castle day trips and the other castles in Scotland within reach of the same city.

How much time to give Alnwick Castle

Most visitors see the castle as one stop on a border day. Here is how to spend the hours, and two ways to stretch the trip.

Three ways to split the day

A tour stop gives you roughly two to three hours at the castle, enough for the courtyards, the walls and either the State Rooms or the Garden, not both. The table below shows how our three routings trade castle time against the rest of Northumberland.

If you want more depth, the castle's 12-month season pass makes a second self-drive visit cheap. If you want more breadth, the Holy Island routings add a tidal crossing that no flexible schedule can guarantee. Decide which matters more before you book, because the two day shapes are genuinely different trips.

  • Book the earliest departure for the quietest castle hour
  • Keep one flexible hour for the State Rooms
  • Season pass covers a return trip within 12 months

  • Book the 08:15 Harry Potter departure if film locations are your priority
  • Confirm your tour option includes or excludes castle entry before you travel
  • Arrive 15 minutes early at Castle Terrace or 60 High Street
  • Check Holy Island tide times if your tour includes the crossing

  • Do not plan a winter visit, the castle closes entirely for the season
  • Do not assume castle entry is in your tour price, it is not on any of the three
  • Do not skip the walls and battlements for the courtyards alone
  • Do not try to fit the Alnwick Garden and full castle interiors into one short stop
  • Do not drive the Holy Island causeway without checking the published tide tables
  • Do not leave the broomstick session until the end of your stop, it fills early

Alnwick Castle: questions visitors ask

Was Harry Potter shot at Alnwick Castle?

Yes. The courtyards and outer walls appeared as Hogwarts in the first two films, and the flying lesson scenes were filmed on site. In season the castle runs broomstick training on the filming spot, and the themed small-coach day from Edinburgh is built around the connection.

Who currently lives in Alnwick Castle?

The castle is the home of Ralph Percy, the 12th Duke of Northumberland, and his family. The Percys have owned it since 1309, which makes it one of the few great English castles still occupied by the family that built it. Part of the building opens to visitors each season.

What films were filmed at Alnwick Castle?

The Harry Potter films Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets are the famous ones, with courtyards doubling as Hogwarts. The castle has also appeared in productions including Downton Abbey. Film-themed visiting is easiest on the Harry Potter day trip.

What is Alnwick Castle famous for?

Three things: a thousand years of border warfare with Scotland, being the Percy family seat since 1309, and playing Hogwarts on screen. It is a Grade I listed building drawing over 600,000 visitors a year alongside the Alnwick Garden.

When was Alnwick Castle built?

Ivo de Vesci built the first parts around 1096 after the Norman Conquest. It was rebuilt in stone by 1157, and the Percys began their major fortress rebuilding after buying it in 1309. The look you see today owes much to Salvin's remodelling of 1854 to 1865.

Can you visit Alnwick Castle from Edinburgh in a day?

Yes, it is the standard way to see it. Three day tours run from central Edinburgh, from $87.06 to $89.79 per person, taking 9 to 9.5 hours. Castle entry is paid separately, about $29.40 (£22) online for adults. Compare the three days here.

Is the Alnwick Garden included in the castle ticket?

Not stated. The Garden is an adjacent but separate attraction with its own ticketing. On a short tour stop, choose between the castle interiors and the Garden rather than trying to do both, and decide before you arrive.

When does Alnwick Castle reopen?

The castle closes for the winter and the castle reopens in March. It closes fully every winter, so all the Edinburgh day tours only run their Alnwick stops inside the season. Check the castle's website for exact dates before booking travel.
