Castles in England: Which to Visit and the Best Tours from London

The castles in England split neatly into two groups: a handful near London that work as day trips, and a northern set around Northumberland that need more planning. This guide picks the tours worth booking, compares tickets and tells you which castle fits which kind of day. For the wider picture, see our guide to the best castles in Europe. For the full shortlist, see the castle tours in Europe.

Quick answer The short answer on English castles

Windsor Castle is the classic castle tour from London, and the shortest big day is the 9-hour Stonehenge and Windsor coach trip. Warwick Castle suits families, Leeds Castle pairs with Canterbury and Dover, and Alnwick is the film castle reached from Edinburgh. Book entry ahead: summer slots sell out.

The castles in England to visit, by trip type

Four English castles have their own guides on this site, plus Dover Castle which pairs with Leeds on the Kent day trips. Prices shown are the tour or ticket that covers entry.

Easy from London

  1. Windsor Castle

Castle from $431.5 to 2 hours suggested

A working royal residence about 25 miles west of central London, occupied since the time of Henry I and the longest-occupied palace in Europe.

Tip: Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and St George's Chapel closes to visitors on Sundays.

  2. Leeds Castle

Castle from $142.8410 hours on the Kent day tour

A castle on islands in a lake near Maidstone, a royal favourite from Edward I to Henry VIII and open to the public since 1976.

Tip: It is in Kent, nowhere near the city of Leeds, and autumn and winter tickets run weekends only in early 2027.

A longer run from London

  1. Warwick Castle

    Castle from $29.936 hours

A medieval fortress begun by William the Conqueror in 1068 on a bluff above the River Avon, now run by Merlin Entertainments with live shows.

Tip: Tickets are priced by date, and the Castle Dungeon and parking cost extra.

  2. Dover Castle

    Castle from $36Flexible

An English Heritage castle above the White Cliffs, with wartime tunnels and the Great Tower, guarded the channel for centuries.

Tip: A ticket only: you reach Dover yourself, or combine it with Leeds Castle on the Kent coach day.

From Edinburgh

  1. Alnwick Castle

Castle from $87.069.5 hours from Edinburgh

The Percy family seat since 1309 and the castle used as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films, guarding a crossing of the River Aln since about 1096.

Tip: Seasonal, closed over winter and reopening in March. Online tickets double as 12-month passes.

How to choose your English castle

Every castle here can fill a day, but they are not interchangeable. Match the castle to the trip you actually want.

If you want royalty, pick Windsor

Windsor Castle is the only one of the castles in England where you walk through State Apartments still used by the monarch, and it has been in continuous royal use since the 12th century. William the Conqueror built the first motte-and-bailey after 1066, Edward III turned it into the most expensive secular building project of the entire Middle Ages in England, and George IV's rebuilding produced the state rooms you see today. The 15th-century St George's Chapel is one of the finest examples of English Perpendicular Gothic.

The practical points matter here. The castle opens Thursday to Monday and closes Tuesday and Wednesday. St George's Chapel shuts at 16:00 and is closed to visitors on Sundays. As a working palace, the whole castle or the State Apartments can close at short notice, so check closure dates before you travel. Official advice is to allow 1.5 to 2 hours, and a ticket converts into a 1-Year Pass for free return visits. The Windsor Castle Admission Ticket at $43 covers entry, the multimedia guide and the chapel.

If you travel with children, pick Warwick

Warwick Castle is the most entertainment-led of the English castles. The stone fortress grew from William the Conqueror's wooden motte of 1068, and its Caesar's Tower and Guy's Tower date from the 14th century, but the operators run birds of prey displays and, in season, a working trebuchet. That mix makes it the easiest of the castles in England for a family day.

Book online in advance: one-day entry starts at $34.80 online against $52.10 on the day, and prices are dynamic by date. The Warwick Castle Admission Ticket at $29.93 includes entry and the live shows but not the Castle Dungeon, which is a separate ticket, and parking costs extra. Typical hours run 10:00 to 17:00, so check the day you visit. From London, the Oxford, Stratford and Warwick day trip fits the castle at the end of a 10.5-hour day with entry on the inclusive option.

If you want a moat and gardens, pick Leeds

Leeds Castle stands on islands in a lake formed by the River Len in Kent, and a castle has stood on the site since 857. Edward I made it a favourite residence and built much of the lake and the barbican across three islands. Henry VIII transformed it in 1519 for Catherine of Aragon, and the Tudor-style castle you see today is largely an 1823 remodelling. The last private owner, Lady Baillie, left it to the nation and it has been open since 1976.

It sits about 1.5 hours from London by coach on the Kent day tours, which is why it is almost always sold with other stops. The Leeds Castle, Cliffs of Dover and Canterbury day trip at $142.84 includes the castle entry and adds the White Cliffs and a guided Canterbury option. Tickets are valid for 12 months, and in the autumn and winter season the grounds open 10:00 to 17:00 with the castle itself closing at 15:30. Note it is near Maidstone, not the city of Leeds.

If you want the film castle, pick Alnwick

Alnwick Castle is the largest inhabited castle in the guide that is not royal: it is the seat of the 12th Duke of Northumberland, and the Percy family has held it since 1307. Captured by King David I of Scotland in 1136 and besieged twice more in the 1170s, it became a major border fortress under the Percys, and in the Harry Potter films its exterior played Hogwarts. The adjacent Alnwick Garden pushed visitor numbers past 600,000 a year.

The catch is the season. The castle closes over winter and reopens in March, and online tickets act as 12-month season passes. The practical base is Edinburgh, not London. The Harry Potter's Alnwick Castle and Scottish Borders day trip runs 9.5 hours from the Royal Mile in a small coach with castle entry bought at check-in, while the Timberbush Holy Island and Alnwick tour adds Lindisfarne, though that stop depends on the tide and castle entry is an optional extra. On a wider northern loop, our castle day trips guide covers the options.

Castle day trips from London, compared

Four coach routes leave London each morning and cover every castle in the south. Here is how to pick between them.

The shortest and the fullest Windsor days

Three tours pair Windsor with Stonehenge. The shortest is the Stonehenge and Windsor day at $93.87 and 9 hours, boarding at Victoria Coach Station at 08:00 and back in the early evening, with entries on the inclusive option and lunch not included. Add Bath and the day stretches to 11 hours on the Stonehenge, Windsor and Bath tour at $96.72, which checks in at 07:30 at gate 1 and departs at 08:00. Swap Stonehenge for Oxford on the Windsor, Stonehenge and Oxford day at $106, also 11 hours, where the meeting point depends on the option.

Our pick is the 9-hour version. Two hours at Windsor is the official suggested visit anyway, so the shorter day loses least at the castle and costs least. Whichever you choose, pick the option with entries at booking or you pay at each stop. If you would rather not join a coach at all, the $43 admission ticket covers Windsor on its own and the train from London takes about an hour.

The Kent route and the Midlands route

The Kent coast runs suit the postcard hunters. The Leeds Castle, Cliffs of Dover and Canterbury day at $142.84 includes Leeds Castle entry and meets at the Evan Evans kiosk opposite gate 1 at Victoria, with Canterbury Cathedral entry and a guided visit only on the option that includes it. The near-identical Leeds Castle, Canterbury and Dover tour at $140 includes the castle too, and its meeting point depends on the option chosen. Both run 10 hours, and the Dover stop puts you under the White Cliffs where Dover Castle itself sits above, reachable separately on the $36 English Heritage ticket.

The Midlands route trades the sea for Shakespeare. The Evan Evans Oxford, Stratford and Warwick day runs 10.5 hours with Warwick Castle entry on the inclusive option, and the Golden Tours version at $106 covers the same four stops in 10 to 11 hours from Bulleid Way near Victoria, entries depending on the option. Expect the Cotswolds as a drive-through on both, and no lunch included.

Planning your visit: openings, tickets and crowds

English castles close more often than continental ones, and the closures are not random. Plan around them.

Closed days catch people out

Windsor is the biggest trap among the castles in England: it opens Thursday to Monday and closes Tuesday and Wednesday, and the March to October hours run 10:00 to 17:15 with last admission at 16:00. St George's Chapel closes to visitors entirely on Sundays, though worshippers are welcome. Because it is a working royal palace, the whole castle or the State Apartments can close at short notice, so check closure dates before booking anything.

Warwick runs typical hours of 10:00 to 17:00 but prices and openings shift by date, so check the day. Leeds Castle keeps autumn and winter grounds hours of 10:00 to 17:00 with the castle interior closing at 15:30 and last entry at 15:00, and runs weekends only in the first weeks of 2027. Alnwick is the extreme case: The castle closes for the winter and the castle reopens in March. Dover Castle and the other English Heritage sites publish their own calendars, so check the castle's website where no fixed hours are listed here.

Booking ahead genuinely matters

This is not generic advice. At the big castles, advance booking changes what you can do. Windsor's ticket converts into a free 1-Year Pass, so keep it after your visit. Warwick charges $52.10 on the day against $34.80 online from, a difference big enough to book before you leave London. Leeds Castle tickets bought online run cheaper than the gate and stay valid for 12 months, which turns a day trip into two.

Alnwick's online tickets are season passes valid for 12 months, useful if the Northumberland coast might pull you back. The same pattern holds across the border if you extend the trip, where Edinburgh Castle tickets often sell out far in advance in summer and once sold out online there are no walk-up tickets at all. The rule of thumb: book the castle before you book the transport, not after.

What you actually see at each castle

Marketing photos blur these castles together. In practice they offer very different visits.

State rooms, shows and wartime tunnels

At Windsor you get three things in one: the State Apartments described by historian Hugh Roberts as the finest expression of later Georgian taste, the Round Tower on a 15-metre chalk motte, and St George's Chapel. The castle covers 13 acres and reads as fortification, palace and small town at once. Much of the present look comes from the rebuilding after the 1992 fire.

Warwick gives you military architecture with a show attached. Caesar's Tower and Guy's Tower, both machicolated and vaulted in stone on every storey, date from the 14th-century rebuild under Thomas de Beauchamp, and the gatehouse and barbican of 1330 to 1360 still guard the entrance. Piers Gaveston was captured and held here in 1312 before his execution. Then the modern layer: falconry displays and the trebuchet in season, and the Castle Dungeon experience on a separate ticket. Dover Castle is the third flavour, with wartime tunnels cut into the cliff below the Great Tower, run by English Heritage, the charity that also guards Stonehenge and Tintagel.

Lakes, islands and a border fortress

Leeds Castle is the most photogenic setting in southern England. The castle sits on two islands in a lake created largely under Edward I, who added a barbican spanning three islands and a gloriette with apartments for the king and queen. Henry VIII's 1519 transformation for Catherine of Aragon left a painting of his meeting with Francis I that still hangs there. Lady Baillie's 1930s interiors, worked on by the Paris decorator Stéphane Boudin, are part of the visit.

Alnwick is the northern outlier. Captured by the Scots in 1136 and besieged by William the Lion in 1172 and 1174, it was the Percys who rebuilt it into the palace-fortress template for 14th-century northern England, alongside Bamburgh and Raby. The Abbot's Tower, Middle Gateway and Constable's Tower survive from that period. Robert Adam worked here in the 18th century before the 4th Duke paid Anthony Salvin to remodel it in the 1850s, and its film role came far later. For more northern options across the border, see Stirling Castle and the Scottish hubs.

Beyond England: pairing with the rest of Europe

An English castle trip slots neatly into a longer European route, and a few pairings work especially well.

North, west and east extensions

Northumberland makes the natural bridge to Scotland. Alnwick is a short run from the border, and the Edinburgh day tours that stop there continue the story of Anglo-Scottish warfare you meet at every Percy stronghold. If the border forts are your thing, our castles in Scotland guide covers Edinburgh, Stirling, Eilean Donan and Urquhart, and the Edinburgh tours run on the same driver-guide model as the Alnwick ones.

West, Wales belongs here's brief: the marcher castles that Edward I built to hold the country pair naturally with English border sites. Ireland is another easy add, with Blarney Castle and the Rock of Cashel reachable on the Dublin three-castle day. East, the continent offers a different castle style entirely. If the medieval military architecture of Warwick and Dover is what you enjoyed, Eltz Castle in the Moselle valley and Predjama Castle built into a cliff face are the two European castles most often named alongside them, and our castles in Germany guide covers the Rhine and Bavaria routes.

Castles in England: common questions

Which castles in England can I visit on a day trip from London?

Windsor, Leeds Castle, Warwick and Dover all work as day trips. Windsor is about an hour from London, Leeds Castle about 1.5 hours by coach on the day tours. The coach options are compared in the day trip table, and single-castle tickets exist for Windsor, Warwick and Dover.

What is the best castle tour from London?

Our pick is the 9-hour Stonehenge and Windsor coach day, the shortest of the combo trips and the one that loses least time at the castle. If you want two castles in one day, the Oxford, Stratford and Warwick route covers Warwick Castle with entry on the inclusive option.

Is Windsor Castle closed on any days?

Yes. It opens Thursday to Monday and closes Tuesday and Wednesday. St George's Chapel inside the castle is closed to visitors on Sundays, and as a working royal palace the whole castle or the State Apartments can close at short notice, so check closure dates before booking.

Where is Leeds Castle?

In Kent, about 7 miles southeast of Maidstone, not in the northern city of Leeds. It stands on islands in a lake formed by the River Len, and it is about 1.5 hours from London by coach on the Kent day tours that continue to Canterbury and Dover.

Can I visit Alnwick Castle from London?

The tours here run from Edinburgh, which is the practical base for Northumberland. Alnwick is also seasonal: The castle closes for the winter and the castle reopens in March, so plan a spring or summer visit and check the calendar first.

Are the castles in England good for kids?

Warwick Castle is the strongest family pick, with live birds of prey shows and a trebuchet in season alongside the medieval towers. The admission ticket includes the shows but not the Castle Dungeon, which is a separate ticket, and parking costs extra.

Do the coach tours include castle entry?

Not automatically. Several London tours sell a cheaper option without entries and an inclusive option with them, so check what your price covers before booking. On the Leeds Castle days the castle entry is included, with Canterbury Cathedral entry only on the option that includes it.

How do English castles compare with castles elsewhere in Europe?

English castles mix royal palaces and military fortresses, and most are single-castle days rather than clusters. For dense groupings, the Loire has Chambord and Chenonceau, Germany has the Rhine and Bavaria, and our best castles in Europe guide ranks the whole continent.
