Where to stay for castle tours: six base towns that work

Where to stay for castle tours matters more than most people expect. Sleep in the wrong city and you add two hours of driving before a castle that sold out its morning slots. This guide compares six base towns, the castle trips that run from each, and the trade-offs between them. For the full shortlist, see the castle tours in Europe.

Quick answer Pick your base town first

Choose the base by the castle, not the city. Füssen puts you 10 minutes from Neuschwanstein. Inverness covers Eilean Donan and Urquhart. Brașov is the practical base for Bran Castle. Book tours with timed entry in summer, because slots sell out.

Key takeaways

Six base towns for castle trips

Each base sits close to at least one major castle, and each has day tours departing from or near it. Times to the castles are our estimates for a normal driving day.

Füssen

Walking distance
About 10 minutes by bus or car to Hohenschwangau village, our estimate
Suits
Travellers who want Neuschwanstein at opening without a 2-hour run from Munich

The Ticket Center in Hohenschwangau sells same-day tickets only, from 08:00, and they are often gone by late morning in high season

Inverness

Walking distance
About 1.5 hours by road to Eilean Donan, our estimate
Suits
Highlands road-trippers chasing Eilean Donan, Urquhart and the Isle of Skye

See stays in Inverness

Edinburgh Old Town

Walking distance
Edinburgh Castle is at the top of your street, 5 to 10 minutes from most Old Town hotels, our estimate
Suits
First-time Scotland visitors who want one castle on foot and Stirling and Urquhart by coach

Edinburgh Castle tickets often sell out far in advance in summer, and once sold out online there are no walk-up tickets

Brașov

Walking distance
About 30 minutes by road to Bran Castle, our estimate
Suits
Anyone wanting Bran and Peleș without the 3-hour run from Bucharest

Bran Castle opens at 12:00 on Mondays, so plan around it

See stays in Brașov

Sintra town

Walking distance
The Pena park gate is a steep climb above town, so most visitors take the shuttle
Suits
Slow travellers who want Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle before the Lisbon day crowds arrive

The palace opens at 09:30 and last admission is 17:30 or 18:00, and the shuttle runs every 15 minutes

Füssen: the base for Neuschwanstein

Füssen is a small Bavarian town at the foot of the Alps, and the closest overnight base to Neuschwanstein Castle.

Why sleep here instead of Munich

Munich is a fine city, but it is about two hours from the castle, and the Munich day trip to Neuschwanstein and Linderhof costs $85 per person and runs 10 to 10.5 hours. From Füssen you can be at the Ticket Center when it opens at 08:00 and take the first entry of the day.

The official advice is to arrive in Hohenschwangau village 1.5 to 2 hours before your Neuschwanstein entry time. From Munich that means a very early start. From a Füssen hotel it means a short bus ride and a coffee.

Visits inside Neuschwanstein run only as guided or audio-guided tours of about 30 minutes covering 14 rooms, with timed entry. Late arrivals lose the tour. Sleeping nearby removes the single biggest risk to your slot.

What the base gets you

Füssen also puts Hohenschwangau Castle in range, the childhood palace of Ludwig II below the bigger castle. Adult entry there is $26.30 (€23.50) if you add it yourself. The Museum of the Bavarian Kings sits in the same village, adult entry $16.23 (€14.50).

Adult entry to Neuschwanstein is $23.50 (€21), reduced $22.40 (€20), and under-18s enter free but still need a ticket. The online booking fee is $2.80 (€2.50) per ticket, and it applies even on free child tickets. Same-day tickets at the Ticket Center are limited and often gone by late morning in high season.

Castle hours are 09:00-18:00 from late March to mid October, and 10:00-16:00 the rest of the year, closed on a handful of winter holidays. Rucksacks, prams and child carriers are not allowed inside.

Our pick

Stay in Füssen for two nights if the Alps matter to you, and book a timed slot well ahead. If you would rather sleep in Munich, take the Neuschwanstein and Linderhof full-day trip and book the option that includes castle tickets, because Neuschwanstein slots sell out and the tour is built around a fixed entry time. It meets on Sonnenstraße in central Munich.

For a wider look at the region, our castles in Germany guide lists the other Bavarian options worth a second day.

Inverness: base for Eilean Donan and Urquhart

Inverness is the capital of the Highlands and the departure point for the long coach days that reach Eilean Donan Castle and the Isle of Skye.

The drive is the reason to book a tour

Eilean Donan stands where three sea lochs meet, on the road to Skye, and Inverness is the practical jumping-off point. The castle is roughly 55 miles west-south-west of Inverness as the crow flies, and the coach route runs via Loch Ness, so a day trip is a 12-hour day. The Timberbush Skye and Eilean Donan day trip costs $92 per person, departs from Railway Terrace in the town centre, and takes a driver-guide. Castle entry is an optional extra, and children under 4 cannot join.

Urquhart Castle is much closer, on its promontory over Loch Ness near Drumnadrochit. The Jacobite Loch Ness cruise and Urquhart Castle trip takes 3.5 hours from Inverness bus station and includes both the cruise and the castle ticket, at $76 per person. It is the shortest way to see the castle if you are already in town.

Practical notes for this base

Eilean Donan adult entry is $17.38 (£13) at the gate, and the castle closes for the whole of January. Hours vary by month, roughly 10:00-16:00 in shoulder months and up to 09:00-18:00 in summer, with last admission one hour before closing. Check the month you travel.

Urquhart adult online tickets are $18.72 (£14), walk-up $21.40 (£16). It opens daily from 09:30, closing between 16:30 in winter and 20:15 at the height of summer, last entry one hour before. Tickets often sell out in summer, so book online. Government troops blew up the castle when they left after the Jacobite risings, which is why it stands as a roofless shell today.

If three days suit you better than one, the three-day Skye and Highlands tour from Edinburgh includes nights in Inverness, which turns this base into a mid-point rather than a start.

Our pick

Sleep in Inverness two nights. Take the Jacobite cruise and castle half day for Urquhart, and the full Skye day for Eilean Donan. Our castles in Scotland guide covers what to add if you have a fourth day.

Edinburgh Old Town: three castles from one base

Edinburgh Old Town is the only base on this list where a major castle is a walk from your hotel, with two more within day-trip range.

The castle at the end of your street

Edinburgh Castle crowns Castlehill at the top of the Royal Mile, so Old Town accommodation puts you 5 to 10 minutes from the gate, our estimate. That matters because the castle opens at 09:30 and summer tickets often sell out far in advance, with no walk-up tickets once online stock is gone. Set aside at least 2 hours, per the official advice, and note the castle can close at short notice in high winds.

The guided tours meet on the Royal Mile, which means zero travel from an Old Town hotel. The Edinburgh Castle guided walking tour with entry costs $55 per person, runs 1.5 hours and covers the Crown Jewels, the Great Hall and Mons Meg with the ticket included.

Stirling and Urquhart as day trips

Stirling Castle is about an hour from Edinburgh by train, uphill from the station, and its admission with audio guide and short introductory tour is $25 per person. The Royal Palace there was the childhood home of Mary Queen of Scots. Prefer a coach? The Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle and Kelpies day leaves Castle Terrace at $76 per person, 9 hours, with castle entry as an option.

For Loch Ness and Urquhart, the Loch Ness, Glencoe and Highlands tour runs 12.5 hours from Castle Terrace at $91 per person. Book the option with the cruise and castle ticket if Urquhart is the point. It is a long day, which is exactly why some travellers split the trip and overnight in Inverness instead.

Our pick

Stay in the Old Town, walk to Edinburgh Castle on day one, and coach to Stirling on day two. Adult online entry at Edinburgh is $31.40 (£23.50) against $34.80 (£26) walk-up, so book ahead either way. See Stirling Castle for the full picture before choosing.

Brașov: where to stay for Bran Castle

Brașov is a Saxon-founded city in central Transylvania, about 166 km north of Bucharest, and the sensible base for Bran Castle.

Why Brașov beats Bucharest for Bran

Bucharest day trips to Bran work, but the road is long. The Dracula's Castle, Peleș and Brașov day from Bucharest costs $44 per person and runs 11 to 12 hours, with free time rather than a guided visit at each stop, so you buy the Bran and Peleș tickets yourself. Children under 7 cannot join. From Brașov, Bran is about 30 minutes by road, our estimate, and you can be at the gate when it opens at 09:00 Tuesday to Sunday.

Mind the Monday rule: Bran Castle opens at 12:00 on Mondays and 09:00 the rest of the week, with last entry 18:00 or 19:00 by season. Adult entry is $20.90 (100 lei), students $12.55 (60 lei), children 5 to 17 $8.37 (40 lei). Halloween events at the end of October cost more, with special tour tickets from 300 lei.

Tours that start in Brașov

Small-group days run from Brașov itself with hotel pickup, covering Bran, Râșnov Fortress and Peleș in about 8 hours. That format lets you sleep in, skip the Bucharest coach legs, and still see three sites. Peleș, the royal summer palace in Sinaia, is the castle most visitors pair with Bran, and our Bran Castle guide explains the pairing.

Brașov rewards the evenings too. The walled old centre grew around the Council Square and the Black Church, one of the largest Gothic churches in south-eastern Europe, and the Saxon merchant houses around it survived the great fire of 1689 and were rebuilt over decades. Settlers from the Rhineland, Flanders and the Moselle founded the town's trading wealth in the medieval period, which is why the architecture reads German rather than Romanian.

Our pick

Two nights in Brașov, Bran on a morning opening day, Peleș on a small-group day with hotel pickup. Take the Bucharest day trip only if Brașov accommodation does not fit your itinerary.

Sintra town: wake up above the clouds

Sintra town sits in the hills 30 km from Lisbon, a UNESCO-listed landscape of palaces and castles, and the only base where you can beat the day-trip crowds on foot.

The early-entry advantage

Pena Park opens at 09:00 and the palace at 09:30, with last palace admission at 17:30 or 18:00. Sleeping in Sintra town puts you at the park gate before the Lisbon coaches arrive. The essential visit, park plus palace, is $22.40 (€20) for adults, the park alone $13.43 (€12), and the climb from the park gate to the palace is steep, so take the shuttle, which runs every 15 minutes for a round trip of $5.04 (€4.50).

The Moorish Castle is the other hilltop site, 09:30-18:00 with last tickets at 17:30, adult entry $13.43 (€12). It predates the Portuguese kingdom, and its walls were taken and retaken through the 11th and 12th centuries before Lisbon fell in 1147. Our Sintra castles guide covers both in detail.

The Lisbon alternative

Most visitors sleep in Lisbon and day trip. The Sintra, Pena, Regaleira and coast day trip costs $49 per person, runs 9 hours, and meets in front of Rossio station at 08:00. Pena and Regaleira tickets come on the option that includes them, so read the option list before booking. It is not suitable for wheelchair users.

That format works, but it trades flexibility for a fixed schedule. In a 9-hour day you see Pena, Quinta da Regaleira, Cabo da Roca and Cascais, which is efficient and relentless. From Sintra town you can split Pena and the Moorish Castle across two mornings, add the Sintra National Palace in the town centre on a quiet afternoon, and walk the historic lanes after the coaches leave.

Our pick

If Pena Palace is the whole point, sleep in Sintra town one night and take the first shuttle up. If you want the coast and Regaleira too, base in Lisbon and take the full-day tour.

Cochem: the Moselle base for Eltz Castle

Cochem is a wine town on the Moselle river, watched over by its own hilltop Reichsburg, and the closest pleasant base for a day at Eltz Castle.

Getting to Eltz from Cochem

Eltz Castle hides in a forested side valley of the Moselle, and from Cochem the drive is our estimate of about 40 minutes on river roads. The castle is open daily only from 29 March to 1 November, 09:30 to 17:00 with last admission at the gate, and closed all winter. Plan a spring to autumn stay.

The ticket includes the guided interior tour of 35 to 40 minutes, given in German with a free printed English text, plus the courtyard and the Treasury. Adult entry is $15.67 (€14), children up to 6 free, and a family ticket for two adults with under-18s is $38.10 (€34).

There is no direct coach day from Cochem in our listings. The bookable Eltz tours run from Frankfurt, such as the Frankfurt Eltz Castle day trip with the guided visit and an evening meal included, which suits travellers based in Frankfurt rather than the Moselle. From Cochem you visit on your own schedule, which is the reason to choose this base.

What else the base offers

Cochem's own Reichsburg stands above the river and pairs naturally with an Eltz morning, giving you two castles without changing hotels. The Moselle valley is also the quietest base here: fewer tour coaches, slower evenings, and wine villages within a short drive.

The trade-off is transport. You need a car or a willingness to use local buses and a walk for the Eltz approach, and you should check the castle's website for the day's access arrangements, since the final stretch is a footpath through the woods. In winter the base loses its headline castle entirely, so shift to Frankfurt for that season and take one of the Frankfurt departures instead. Our Eltz Castle guide lists the current tour options in detail.

Our pick

Choose Cochem if you have a car and three or four days for the Moselle. Choose Frankfurt if you want Eltz as a single guided day with everything arranged.

Castles worth adding to these bases

Each of these sits within range of one of the six bases and pairs well with the main trip.

Stirling Castle

Stirling's Royal Palace was the childhood home of Mary Queen of Scots. It opens daily from 09:30, and the Stirling, Kelpies and Loch Lomond day covers it from Edinburgh.

Where to stay for castle tours: questions

Is it better to stay in Füssen or Munich for Neuschwanstein?

Füssen puts you minutes from Hohenschwangau village and the 08:00 Ticket Center, and the official advice is to arrive 1.5 to 2 hours before your entry time. From Munich, the full-day coach trip handles both palaces in one 10 to 10.5 hour day at $85 per person. Choose Füssen for early entries and the Alps, Munich for nightlife and one-day efficiency.

Where should I stay to visit Eilean Donan Castle?

Inverness is the practical base, because the coach days to Eilean Donan and Skye depart from Railway Terrace in the town centre. Expect a 12-hour day, much of it on the road, on the Skye and Eilean Donan trip. The castle closes for the whole of January, so travel between spring and autumn.

Is Brașov a good base for Bran Castle?

Yes, and it is the best one. Bran is roughly 30 minutes from Brașov by road, our estimate, against a long coach day from Bucharest. Remember Bran opens at 12:00 on Mondays and 09:00 Tuesday to Sunday. Small-group days with hotel pickup in Brașov cover Bran, Râșnov and Peleș in about 8 hours.

Do I need to stay near a castle, or can I day trip everywhere?

Day trips work from gateway cities, and many travellers base in Munich, Edinburgh or Lisbon. Staying near the castle buys you early entries, evening light and a fallback if a slot sells out. Edinburgh Old Town is the strongest compromise, with Edinburgh Castle on foot and Stirling and Urquhart by coach.

How far ahead should I book castle tickets from my base?

Book as soon as your dates are fixed for the sell-out castles. Edinburgh Castle tickets often sell out far in advance in summer, with no walk-up tickets once online stock is gone, and Urquhart also sells out in summer. Neuschwanstein same-day tickets at the Ticket Center are limited and often gone by late morning in high season.

Which base works without a car?

Edinburgh Old Town, easily, since the castle is walkable and coach tours leave from Castle Terrace. Füssen works by local bus to Hohenschwangau. Inverness works for coach tours but not for independent exploring. Cochem and the Eltz approach really need a car, our view.

Can I visit Pena Palace from Lisbon instead of sleeping in Sintra?

Yes. The Sintra full-day tour from Lisbon meets at Rossio station at 08:00 and covers Pena, Regaleira and the coast in 9 hours. Sleeping in Sintra town instead gets you to the 09:00 park opening before the coaches, and the shuttle saves the steep climb to the palace.

Are castle hotels in Europe worth the price?

Some are, but proximity beats theming. A plain room 10 minutes from the gate beats a castle experience two hours away, because entry slots are the scarce resource at Neuschwanstein, Edinburgh and Urquhart. Decide by walking time to the castle first, character second.

Pick your base, then lock the castle slot

Choose a base town from the comparison above and book the matching day tour with entry included before slots sell out.

Every tour listed offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start.
