The Best Castles in Europe and How to Visit Them

The best castles in Europe split into three kinds of visit: fairytale palaces, working royal residences and medieval fortresses. Each one rewards a different plan, and the difference is mostly about tickets, timing and how you get there. This guide ranks the strongest candidates by country and matches each with the tours and tickets that actually work. For the full shortlist, see the castle tours in Europe.

Quick answer Best castles in Europe at a glance

Germany, Scotland and France have the strongest claims to the best castles in Europe, each for a different reason. Germany owns the fairytale image with Neuschwanstein and Eltz, Scotland packs four major fortresses into small distances, and the Loire Valley concentrates Renaissance chateaux. Your best single booking depends on which city you start from.

Key takeaways

The Best Castles in Europe, Country by Country

One entry per castle we cover in depth, ordered within each country. The from price is the cheapest tour or ticket currently listed for that castle, and the tip is the rule most likely to catch you out.

Germany

  1. Neuschwanstein Castle

Castle from $85About 30 minutes inside, half a day on site

Ludwig II's 19th-century Romanesque palace above Hohenschwangau, the image most people mean by fairytale castles.

Tip: Visits run as 30-minute timed tours and summer slots sell out, so take the ticket option on the Munich day trip.

  2. Heidelberg Castle

Castle from $12.31 (€11)Half a day with the old town

A red sandstone ruin above the Neckar, home of the Heidelberg Tun, the enormous wine barrel included in the palace ticket.

Tip: The interiors are only seen on a guided tour that costs extra, and English tours run to a fixed weekly pattern.

  3. Eltz Castle

    Castle from $15.67 (€14)half a day

A medieval family castle in a forested valley, still owned by the same family after centuries and never destroyed.

Tip: Open daily only from late March to 1 November, closed completely in winter.

Scotland

  1. Edinburgh Castle

Castle from $55at least 2 hours

The fortress on Castle Rock in the middle of the capital, holding the Honours of Scotland and the site of 26 recorded sieges.

Tip: Summer tickets sell out far in advance and once online stock is gone there are no walk-up tickets.

  2. Stirling Castle

    Castle from $24.70 (£18.50)half a day

The restored Royal Palace where Mary Queen of Scots spent her childhood, an hour from Edinburgh.

Tip: The main route from the gate runs 160 m on cobbles with gradients up to 1:9.

  3. Eilean Donan Castle

    Castle from $17.38 (£13)about 1 hour

The small castle on a tidal island where three sea lochs meet, the photographed front door to the Isle of Skye.

Tip: Closed the entire month of January, and hours vary by month with last admission an hour before closing.

  4. Urquhart Castle

    Castle from $18.72 (£14)about 1.5 hours

A ruined fortress on a Loch Ness promontory, blown up by government troops leaving after the Jacobite risings.

Tip: Tickets often sell out in summer, and last entry is a full hour before closing.

England

  1. Windsor Castle

    Castle from $42.80 (£32)1.5 to 2 hours

A working royal residence an hour from London, with the State Apartments and St George's Chapel inside the walls.

Tip: Closed every Tuesday and Wednesday, and St George's Chapel closes to visitors on Sundays.

  2. Warwick Castle

    Castle from $34.80 (£26)about 6 hours

A Norman castle rebuilt by William the Conqueror's men, now run as a live-show attraction with birds of prey and a trebuchet in season.

Tip: Prices are dynamic by date, and on-the-day entry costs $52.10 (£39) against the online rate.

  3. Leeds Castle

    Castle from $46.10 (£34.50)about half a day

A moated castle in Kent, not the city of Leeds, set on islands in a lake about 1.5 hours from London by coach.

Tip: Tickets are valid for 12 months, but the grounds run weekends only in early 2027.

  4. Alnwick Castle

    Castle from $29.40 (£22)about half a day

The Percy family fortress used as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films, on the Northumberland coast route.

Tip: Fully seasonal: The castle closes for the winter and it reopens in March, so a winter visit is impossible.

Ireland

  1. Blarney Castle

    Castle from $26.90 (€24)about half a day

The 600-year-old MacCarthy keep whose Blarney Stone is kissed at the top of the tower, open all year.

Tip: No timed slots, but the stone queue is longest in the middle of the day, based on our estimate.

Czech Republic

  1. Prague Castle

Castle from $212 days of ticket validity, about half a day on site

The largest ancient castle complex in the world at almost 70,000 square metres, holding St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace and Golden Lane.

Tip: The main circuit ticket is valid two consecutive days with each building visited once, so you can split the visit.

Romania

  1. Bran Castle

    Castle from $20.90 (100 lei)about 1.5 hours

The 1377 Saxon fortress marketed as Dracula's Castle, later the home of Queen Marie of Romania.

Tip: Monday opening starts at 12:00, and Halloween special tour tickets cost more.

Portugal

  1. Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle, Sintra

Castle from $13.43 (€12)a full day for both

Ferdinand II's Romanticist palace on a Sintra hilltop, paired with the older Castle of the Moors on the next ridge.

Tip: The climb from the park gate to the palace is steep, and the shuttle is $5.04 (€4.50) round trip.

Italy

  1. Castel Sant'Angelo

    Castle from $28about 2 hours

Hadrian's mausoleum turned papal fortress, linked to the Vatican by the Passetto di Borgo escape route.

Tip: Closed Mondays, and ID is required on some visits for security.

Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia

  1. Chillon Castle

    Castle from $18about 2 hours

The lakeside castle at Montreux on the shore of Lake Geneva, reached on foot or by bus from town.

Tip: Closed 25 December and 1 January, and online booking is advised.

  2. Hohensalzburg Fortress

Fortress from $22about half a day

The fortress above Salzburg's old town, open 365 days a year with the Prince's Chambers and museums inside.

Tip: The funicular closes for maintenance each winter, so check whether you will walk up.

  3. Predjama Castle

Castle from $26.90 (€24)half a day with the cave

A Renaissance fortress built into a cave mouth, paired with Postojna Cave on nearly every visit.

Fairytale Palace, Ruin or Royal Residence: How to Pick

The best castles in Europe divide into three types of experience, and knowing which one you want removes most of the decision.

The fairytale palaces

These are the 19th-century Romanticist builds: Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria and Pena Palace above Sintra. Both were deliberate evocations of a medieval past rather than medieval buildings, and both sit on hilltops where the approach is part of the visit. The trade-off is crowds and timed entry. Neuschwanstein admits visitors only on 30-minute guided or audio-guided tours of 14 rooms, with as many as 6,000 people a day in summer, and Pena runs a timed slot system with a steep climb from the park gate. Book the entry-included option on a day tour and let the operator hold the slot.

If you want a medieval castle that simply looks like the fairytale version, Eltz Castle is the honest answer: a genuine family fortress in a Moselle valley, never destroyed, entered on a 35 to 40 minute guided tour that the ticket includes.

The working royal residences

Windsor Castle and Prague Castle are buildings with jobs. Windsor is the King's weekend home, Prague is the seat of the Czech presidency, and both can close rooms or whole areas at short notice. The reward is that the interiors are lived-in state rooms, chapels and treasuries rather than museum sets. Windsor's ticket converts into a free 1-Year Pass for return visits, and Prague's main circuit ticket stays valid for two consecutive days, which is the cheapest per-building entry of any major castle on this list at $21.

Edinburgh Castle sits between categories: still a garrison with the army in ceremonial charge, but essentially the national treasury, holding the Honours of Scotland.

The ruins and fortresses

If you care about military history and views rather than furnished rooms, aim for the broken ones. Urquhart Castle was blown up by departing government troops after the Jacobite risings and now frames Loch Ness from a promontory. The Moorish Castle at Sintra gives you walls and lookout points rather than interiors. Predjama Castle is a functioning fortress built into a cliff face, defensible because of the cave behind it. These cost less, take less time and rarely sell out.

Seasons and Closures Across Europe

Every castle on this list has a rule that can end a trip planned carelessly. These are the ones that matter most.

Winter closures

Two of the most photographed castles in Europe shut for the whole winter. Eltz Castle opens only from 29 March to 1 November, with last admission at 17:00, and is closed otherwise. Alnwick Castle is fully seasonal too: The castle closes for the winter and the castle reopens in March, so the Harry Potter filming locations are unreachable in the meantime. The cave under Predjama Castle only opens June to August, though the castle itself opens every day all year.

The safe winter picks are the ones that never close: Hohensalzburg Fortress opens 365 days a year and Blarney Castle opens all year from 09:00. Prague Castle grounds stay open 06:00 to 22:00 with buildings on shorter winter hours of 09:00 to 16:00.

Weekly closing days

Windsor Castle closes every Tuesday and Wednesday, and St George's Chapel inside it is closed to visitors on Sundays as well. Castel Sant'Angelo is closed Mondays except special openings. Bran Castle opens at 12:00 on Mondays against a 09:00 start the rest of the week. A Saturday to Monday city break can lose a castle entirely to these rules, so check the day before you fix your itinerary.

Weather and short-notice shutdowns

Edinburgh Castle can close at short notice in high winds, which happens on the exposed rock summit. Windsor Castle as a working palace can shut the State Apartments or the whole site with little warning, so check closure dates before travelling. Where a castle sells out, the problem is the reverse: Edinburgh and Urquhart Castle both routinely exhaust online tickets in summer, and once Edinburgh sells out online there are no walk-up tickets at all.

Combining Castles in One Trip

Some of the best castle regions work because two or three fortresses sit within a single day of each other. Here is how to chain them without turning the day into a race.

From Edinburgh: three different castles in three directions

Edinburgh is the best base in Europe for castle variety. In the city itself, Edinburgh Castle takes a morning. An hour west, Stirling Castle pairs with Loch Lomond and the Kelpies on a single coach day such as the Timberbush Loch Lomond, Stirling and Kelpies tour. North, the Highlands day to Loch Ness can add Urquhart Castle on the option with the cruise and castle ticket, which is the 12.5-hour Loch Ness, Glencoe and Highlands tour. See the full set on our castles in Scotland guide.

The realistic rhythm is one city castle day and two coach days. Trying to squeeze Stirling and Urquhart into the same day means too much road.

From London and from Dublin

From London, Windsor Castle shares a coach day with Stonehenge and Bath on the Evan Evans three-sight tour, and Kent gives you Leeds Castle with Canterbury and the Dover cliffs. The English castles in detail are on our castles in England page.

From Dublin, Ireland's three-castle day is the strongest value in this whole guide: the Blarney, Rock of Cashel and Cahir tour includes every admission for $95 and still leaves time to kiss the stone. More options are on our castles in Ireland guide.

The pairing pairs: Bavaria, the Loire, Transylvania and Sintra

Some castles are built to be doubled. Ludwig II's Neuschwanstein and Linderhof share one coach day from Munich, and the German options run wider on our castles in Germany page. The Loire works as Chambord plus Chenonceau, both entry included on the Paris day trip with wine, with more on our castles in France guide.

From Bucharest, Bran Castle comes bundled with Peleș and Brașov. From Lisbon, Sintra packs Pena, Regaleira and the Moorish Castle into one hill town. Every departure city is compared on our castle day trips page.

The Booking Rules That Decide Your Day

At most of these castles the difference between a good visit and a wasted morning is one booking made early. These are the patterns to plan around.

Sell-out castles: book the entry, not just the tour

Three castles on this list run out of capacity rather than hours. Neuschwanstein sells timed 30-minute tour slots, and the ticket centre in Hohenschwangau sells same-day tickets only, limited and often gone by late morning in high season. Edinburgh Castle tickets sell out far in advance in summer, with no walk-up fallback. Urquhart Castle also sells out in summer. The fix is the same in each case: take a tour option that includes the entry, because the operator's allocation is held before you arrive.

For Neuschwanstein, the Munich day trip to both palaces is built around a fixed entry time, and the official advice is to arrive in Hohenschwangau village 1.5 to 2 hours before your slot.

Option traps: check what the price actually includes

Many day trips are sold on a sliding scale where the base price covers only transport. On the Bucharest Dracula's Castle day trip you buy the Bran and Peleș tickets yourself at each stop. On the Loire day from Paris entry to Chambord and Chenonceau is included, but guided visits inside the castles are not, and lunch is free time in Blois. On the Sintra day, Pena and Regaleira tickets come only on the option that includes them. Read the inclusion line before comparing prices, because two tours at similar prices can differ by a whole castle ticket or more.

Where a tour leaves entry to you, the castle's own gate price applies on top, for example Bran Castle at $20.90 (100 lei) for adults.

Getting there is part of the ticket

Some tickets assume you are already close. The Prague main circuit ticket covers four buildings but no guide and no transfer, while the guided Prague Castle tour adds the tram up the hill and a local guide for $58. The Chillon Castle ticket works because the castle is a short walk or bus from Montreux.

The Hohensalzburg Fortress ticket comes with a funicular option, which is worth taking unless you want the steep walk up. If a meeting point is a city-centre street rather than the castle gate, plan the last stretch yourself, as with the Edinburgh tours that meet on the Royal Mile.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most beautiful castles to visit in Europe?

By consistent traveller ratings, Neuschwanstein, Pena Palace, Eltz Castle, Edinburgh Castle and Chillon Castle lead. For the fairytale image, Neuschwanstein Castle is the original and still the benchmark, reached most easily on the Munich day trip.

Which country in Europe has the best castles?

Germany for fairytale palaces, Scotland for fortresses within short distances, and France for Renaissance chateaux. Scotland is the easiest to actually cover: four major castles, from Edinburgh Castle to Urquhart Castle, sit within reach of one city.

What is the biggest castle in Europe?

Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle complex in the world, at almost 70,000 square metres. The main circuit ticket costs $21 and stays valid two consecutive days, covering St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St George's Basilica and Golden Lane.

Which castles in Europe close in winter?

Eltz Castle closes entirely outside 29 March to 1 November, and Alnwick Castle reopens in March after its seasonal shutdown. Hohensalzburg Fortress by contrast opens 365 days a year. Check our seasons section above before fixing dates.

Can I visit two castles in one day?

Yes, and many tours are built for it. The Blarney, Rock of Cashel and Cahir day from Dublin covers three castles with every admission included. The Munich day to Neuschwanstein and Linderhof does two palaces in one coach trip. See our castle day trips comparisons.

Do I need to book castle tickets in advance?

For Neuschwanstein, Edinburgh and Urquhart, yes: all three sell out in summer, and Edinburgh has no walk-up tickets once online stock is gone. Guided options such as the Edinburgh Castle walking tour include the entry ticket, which secures your slot.

How much does it cost to visit the best castles in Europe?

Castle entry runs from $12.31 (€11) at Heidelberg to $46.10 (£34.50) at Leeds Castle, and the tickets and tours we list run from $13 for Pena Palace and $17.97 for Chillon to $128 for the Postojna Cave and Predjama combination. The full price comparison is in the table above, with the Prague Castle ticket the best value per building.

What is the best castle day trip from London?

The Stonehenge, Windsor Castle and Bath day is the strongest all-rounder, with three major sights in 11 hours. Take the option with entries included, since Windsor Castle otherwise charges $42.80 (£32) at the gate.
